For some reason, same sex marriage advocates feel that the only reason people are against gay marriage is because they cannot have children. So, in Washington, a ballot initiative is being put forward that would require anyone getting married to have children within 3 years or have the marriage annulled.

The time has come for these conservatives to be dosed with their own medicine," said WA-DOMA organizer Gregory Gadow in a printed statement. “If same-sex couples should be barred from marriage because they can not have children together, it follows that all couples who cannot or will not have children together should equally be barred from marriage."
They just don't get it. The argument of procreation for marriage is the last argument "conservatives" use against gay marriage. The whole "besides, why get married if you can't have kids?" is thrown out at the end. The reasons against gay marriage is for the sanctity of the family, the preservation of of father AND mother figures, the sanity of children growing up, and the less-spreading of promiscuous lifestyles (which straight promiscuity can be thrown in there as well). "Family" vs. "having children" are two different topics.
Conservatives have to draw the line somewhere, and when the very foundations of marriage is belittled by confused activists, then that's where the line gets drawn.

You do realize that the earliest form of marriage was basically kidnap and rape, right? And that marriage for love is a very new phenomenon?

It does, when you look at the big picture. What marriage and families espouses right now is under attack with gay marriage. The general erosion of morales in a society lead to the degredation of that society. America has been slipping in the sexual moral ground for years, which has ultimately lead us to this point. 30 years ago, we wouldn't be here because our morales had not yet eroded to this point.
I think gay marriage has been a wake up call for a lot of Americans, that things have just gone too far, and so a stand must be made.
