A lot of people have asked me, if I'm for good stewardship of our environment, why am I so against Global Warming? In a word: economics.
Foreign Affairs: How Biofuels Could Starve the Poor
Excellent article on the dangers of ethanol. The problems with ethanol are two fold: 1) changes on the market and 2) simple not worth the effort. If corn is going to be on par with oil, the prices are going to quickly match, as we've recently seen. Corn prices have been on the rise, and in our current economy, corn is one of the base staples. It feeds cattle, it's used for corn flour, and it's used to make more corn. It's so base to the economy, even a minor fluctuation in the price can have major ripple effects. Price of corn is up, corn meal is up too. This has cause Mexico's tortilla prices jumped, cause a major headache in their economy. Price of corn is up, the cost of feed for cattle and other livestock is up, which causes the cost of meat to rise, cause a headache in our economy. And now the cost of simple corn seeds is higher, causing a headache to our farmers.
The second danger of ethanol is that if you think this will stop global warming, keep dreaming. It takes more ethanol to travel a mile than gasoline. If we turns ALL our farmland into corn fields, we would only have enough ethanol to replace about 15% usage of our gasoline. Fuel emissions from our cars only accounts for 20% of the greenhouse gases. And to top it off, ethanol is no cleaner than gasoline! So we're talking 15% of 20% is the savings we'd have on ethanol. What's the point?!? We're all gonna fry or be under water in 20 years anyways...
Bottom line is it is impossible to replace our gas usage with ethanol, let alone our oil usage. Most people don't realize that out of a barrel of crude oil, only 51% is used for gasoline. The other half is used for many other products that we take for granted in our society, such other gases like propane and butane, tar for our roofs and roads, even material used in plastics and on computer boards. We aren't going to replace those with ethanol.
So this is what bugs me about the Global Warming furor. Rather than coming up with reasonable solutions (like cars that can reuse their emissions as energy coupled with drilling for oil in our own damn country), we waste time of headline grabbing dead ends like ethanol...

dude, corn isn't the only source of ethanol. in fact, its about the least efficient source there is. so of course if your stupid enough to try and power america in the least efficient way possible it wont work. however, ethanol can be made from better sources like sugarcane, and when we find how to make it from cellulose we can turn waste products (e.g. sawdust, corn cobs, useless stuff basically) into ethanol, so actually a lot can be made without hurting the economy. of course, for the usa some will have to be imported coz it uses so much but u guys import a hell of a lotta oil now right? oils gonna run out, get used to the idea. even if climate change is not real we still need a replacement.
Second, ethanol is way cleaner than oil if you make it the right way. it uses less energy to produce (theoretically its carbon neutral), burns cleaner (less C and CO, so cleaner AND better for your engine) and most importantly is renewable. If engines are properly tuned (as in, optimized for ethanol instead of petrol) the mileage difference is only tiny. Also, plastics are mostly derived from ethene. it is not hard to turn ethanol into ethene through dehydration, and from there molecules can be split or combined to form other products such as lpg, oils, tar, even petrol and diesel if you want.
Your country has the idea of using ethanol and it is a good idea, but it has to be executed properly to work. When it does not only will it solve a lot of problems but be sure it'll make a lot of money too, do you really want the american economy to miss out on such an opportunity? if not us australians will be happy to sell it to you guys, we need more secondary industry anyway :) |
