The Las Vegas city council has recently ordered a Hummer dealership to lower their American Flag!
Can't fly the flag anymore?
Interesting story, complaints that the dealership was doing this trying
to draw sales, as opposed to displaying their patriotism, seems a bit
strange to me. Where I live, there are plenty of stores that have flags
flying, banks, grocery stores, etc. I like seeing the flag, and have no
problem if it's flown at a commercial location.
What do you think? Flag at stores, patriotism or commercialism?

I don't really care if it's commercialism or patriotism. How can one judge which it is? And if one can't judge conculsively which it is; then what right does anyone have to make someone take the flag down? To me, flying the flag is a great act and even if it IS an act of commercialism, when I see the big flag at, for example, Macey's on 800 North, Orem, I always feel a tingle of pride and patriotism. Yup, even from your English buddy!!!
When I first began my visits to Utah, I was overwhelmed at the pride in the flag. One doesn't see flags flying like this in England (a great pity) and to me, it's one of the things that binds this country together. The ceremonies surrounding the flag are very impressive and the sight of it flying in the wind is very powerful.
By the way, I'd say the same for pretty much any flag of pretty much any country and the thought of some "suit" being judge and jury over whether or not someone is flying it for commercial or patriotic reasons is ludicrous.
But then again, it's hardly the most ridiculous act we can comment on. Is it! |

The irony of Free Speech: One's freedom will at some point quelch another's. For example, do you have the freedom to play music as loud as you want? Does that encroach on another's right to have silence? When you say "any flag of any country", what if it was a 40 foot Nazi Germany flag flying? Many people would be so insensed lawsuits would be flying, etc. etc. IMHO, I think it would be in bad taste, but it would actually exemplify what makes America great, the whole free-speech thingy.
Either way, I do agree that WHO CARES if it was put up for commercial reasons, it's still wonderful to see the amazing stars & stripes flying high overhead, and I'd love to see it in many more places!
